TWA PROJECT'S ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA CO-SPONSORED BY BHP LAW

On February 3, 2010, Teach with Africa hosted its 3rd annual fundraiser at San Francisco's St. Regis Hotel. The Teach with Africa gala is the primary means by which Teach with Africa (www.teachwithafrica.org) raises money to fund its fellowship program in support of the LEAP Schools, which are schools that serve underprivileged students from townships outside of Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Brydon Hugo & Parker was a Gold Sponsor of this year's event. Heidi K. Hugo, a partner at BHP, is a member of Teach with Africa's Advisory Board. Ms. Hugo also coordinated the organization's pilot project, 'Celebrate, Collaborate.' Along with former Teach with Africa fellows, she worked to connect Bay Area high school students with the LEAP students in South Africa through on-line communication, and ultimately face-to-face, to celebrate their similarities and to collaborate on breaking down social and economic barriers to equality in education.

Students from schools including Drew Academy and Lick-Wilmerding High School in San Francisco, Redwood High School, the Branson School and The Marin School in Marin County, and Ralph Bunche High School in Oakland participated with their South African counterparts in the on-line communications, a one day workshop addressing educational issues and several excursions around the Bay Area.

In the one day workshop, the students compared their experiences and the barriers to education in post-Apartheid South Africa and in the U.S. after Brown v. Board of Education, the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision which struck down the 'separate, but equal' standard in education.

Brydon Hugo & Parker is proud to support Teach with Africa and its efforts to encourage meaningful global communication and understanding.
